MONONGAHELA-STYLE RYE WHISKEY

DESCRIPTION
Monongahela-style Rye Whiskey was the style made by farmers in Western Pennsylvania. They found that barley was not only difficult to grow there, but that being further from the ports, it was also more expensive to buy. They malted rye to use in place of the malted barley portion of the mash. This made the first all-rye whiskey. It was also the first whiskey without the whiskey note of flavor that all whiskies bore until then. Because of this perceived inferiority, the farmers' loss in Shay's Rebllion, or the Whiskey Rebellion, and barley being shipped on newly built canals and railroads made the style essentially disappear. Today there is little understanding how the Monongahela style was different from the Pennsylvania style.
